The Problem

Waitati street in flood in 2006

The challenges we face are clear:

  • Sea level rise due to climate change and properties in flood hazard zones.
  • Greater weather extremes, and a need to build for changing wind, rain, and temperature ranges.
  • Existing stock of cold, damp homes, and ongoing problems of fuel poverty.

These challenges face tens of thousands of people in Dunedin and nationwide.  The question is; what can we do?

Working with civic leaders, community members, Takata whenua, innovators, and business, the Climate Safe House project seeks to understand the challenges and deliver practical, scalable, affordable responses to them.
